So, just what do you want from me?
It seems like a reasonable question that could be asked in any relationship. But if this question was from an individual and directed to Jesus Himself, how do you suppose Jesus would answer? How about you? Have you ever asked the Lord that question?
In Hebrews 11:6 we find a fascinating response to this question. And it has everything to do with worship. It reads: “Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must first believe He exists and rewards those who seek Him.”
So the answer to the question is faith, right? Isn’t that what God wants from me? Nope. Read it again slower…
If you think about it, what it really says God wants is for us to “draw near” to Him, and the mechanism required for us to do that is faith. What God really wants for all of us is to walk with Him in intimate relationship that is characterized by our worship. And for us to worship Him, we must have faith in Him.
Worship without faith is not worship at all — it’s idolatry. And faith without worship is, as James puts it, dead.
Allow your heart to be challenged to look beyond the mechanics of faith and into the purpose; it’s so we can draw near to the One who loves us so much.
