“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other . . .”
As it happened, agreement on the final wording of the document would not come until July 4th. Now, 238 years later, the immortal words written so eloquently by Thomas Jefferson still move the hearts of a free people, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienble rights…” Adams and the other delegates were well aware of the gravity of this declaration, and they knew defending it would be costly. Continuing his letter to Abigail, he wrote,
“You will think me transported with enthusiasm but I am not. — I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. — Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means.”
Today, we live in a world that too often forgets our rights were endowed by our creator. Modern humanity, with all its hubris, is loath to rely on the “Divine Providence” of an Almighty God. No matter. The great thing about truth is that it remains true in the face of all doubt, denial, or rejection. Our redeemer lives! And the freedom guaranteed by His blood is an eternal freedom! The Apostle Paul said it this way in his letter to the Roman church,
“For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!” (HCSB)
So as you celebrate this holiday, and rightly remember the bravery of these men who mutually pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to establish this great republic, rejoice in the truth that a greater kingdom – an eternal kingdom, has been established by our Creator, and has been secured for us by the blood of His Son, Our Savior, Jesus Christ!
