When I was growing up, I played three different sports. Football season became basketball season which became baseball season, until football started again. And whichever one I was playing at the time was my favorite sport. I loved them all.
The college graduation of my youngest son John this past week was a clear reminder to me that our lives have seasons too. Our first years of marriage were all about our own education – college and seminary. Then came our kids and their school years. Now we have two grandchildren on the way and time is marching right along. Pretty soon, I’ll be right back at school programs and ballgames.
I’m not writing the chronicle of the passing of time. It was Augustine who said, “Time doesn’t take any time off,” and he said it centuries ago. I’m merely reminding myself that life is all about seasons. One season becomes the next, and so on.
My prayer is that God would give me the grace to enjoy each one as my favorite just the way I used to enjoy each sport as they came along. As we get older, we reflect on the “good ole days” and mourn the passing of our youth. We all tend to look back with nostalgia and forward with hope that somehow it will be better. The truth is, the old days weren’t as good as we remember them, and tomorrow won’t be as hard as we fear.
What if right now turns out to be “the good ole days?”
Every season brings its own joys and challenges. The best part of all is the assurance that we have a Friend who walks every step with us until the day we see Him face to face. May we embrace each day as a gift from God and live with a heart of gratitude for the seasons as they come and go.
Today is the best day I have. I want to use it to worship God with my life and enjoy His presence in everything I do. The more I think about it, the more I believe…
Right now is my favorite season of all.
