At my church, worship is led by volunteers who rotate from week to week. This past weekend, I had the privilege of co-leading with another volunteer. We had a funny mishap during communion, which I wrote about on my personal blog. The experience has led me to consider how oftentimes real lessons are learned from awkward, funny, or embarrassing moments in ministry. So, I thought that I would pose the question here: What ministry lessons have you learned through an embarrassing moment? Leave your comment below.
I am relatively new to leading worship and I have found that the most awkward things are when you take your self seriously, like forgetting which song you are singing…in the middle of the song. This is where sheet music or backup lyrics would’ve been quite the life-saver.
Never NEVER!!! Ask a woman when the baby is due, until you KNOW FOR SURE that she is pregnant. NUF said. 🙂
Back in the ’70’s, a Texas minister of music was leading the song, “Happiness Is.” The beginning of the chorus goes, “Real joy is mine, no matter when teardrops start…” Well, the minister forgot the words temporarily and started to say “…no matter when teardrops FALL.” He realized his mistake as he started to sing the last word. Unfortunately, as he sang, the last word came out with the “f” from fall, followed by the “art” from start. He tried to go on, but to no avail. They had to stop the song and the whole congregation broke up and had a good laugh.
