I was reading a blog post recently from a Christian giant who is currently facing his final struggle with the catastrophic disease of leukemia. His testimony was short and sweet, “Body weakening — praise strengthening.” For the last year, doctors and medical professionals have joined forces with this man to wage an all-out battle on this form of cancer that now appears to have won. From a human perspective one might say, “He will lose his battle with cancer.”
But when I read his testimony my immediate thought was, He is winning and surely will win the victory over cancer!
It’s something that we all know, but need to be reminded of constantly — life is terminal. The human mortality rate is 100%. That’s the way God planned it. He never intended for this life to be all we would ever know — He has so much more in store for us! And the glory we’ll know when we are with Him in heaven will last forever. Somebody say, “Hallelujah!”
In 1 Peter we see this truth in a powerful verse, “…now for a short time you have had to be distressed… so that the genuineness of your faith… may result in praise, glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (excerpt from 1 Peter 1:7, HCSB)
Did you catch that? It means that the trials we face now are part of the glory we will share then! This part is temporary! God gives us the grace now to pass through this life, so that we can spend eternity praising Him for the grace He gave us to pass through this life and on to eternal life with Him! It is only in the moments of trial that we start to see what grace is all about.
The man I referred to earlier was starting to taste that reality when he wrote the message, “body weakening — praise strengthening.” My earthly body is weakening, too — and so is yours, whether or not you are facing a disease like cancer — that reality is a given. But here’s the question to ponder, “Is my praise strengthening?”
No matter where you are today — whatever you may be facing — make this your testimony, too.
Body weakening — praise strengthening.
