Written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend in 2001, “In Christ Alone (My Hope Is Found),” has become one of the most popular Christian songs of all time in the UK. Getty shares, “With ‘In Christ Alone’, I wanted to write a song that would tell the whole story of the life of Christ; almost like a modern creed.”
Townend adds, “So much of it encapsulates what we need to know about who we are in Christ. It speaks about our hope. It speaks about death and Jesus’ resurrection, but then it goes on to speak about what that means for us. In the last verse it talks about ‘No guilt in life no fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.’ It goes on to say nothing can pluck us from His hand.
I think probably perhaps it’s taken on a particular significance because it’s very important for us to be thinking these things in the light of what’s happened… in terms of 9/11 and all those things; that actually we need to recognize that there is someone who is in control amid all the fear that’s happening in the world. God knows what He is doing. We are in His hands and I think that’s been part perhaps of the popularity of this song.”
