There’s nothing quite like it. I hope all of you at one point or another have experienced it. I hope, even more, that all of us are growing in our ability to give the well-timed word of encouragement.
Just the other morning, right before I gathered my stuff and headed off to downtown, a text message came. It read, “I hope you have a great day, Mike! You are a blessing!”
It was unexpected and from someone who rarely contacts me. It was someone that LifeWay Worship has worked with for a number of years. The message was out of the blue — but right on time.
The person had no idea what was on my calendar and what I was dealing with in that moment. It doesn’t even matter now. But that short text started my day on a different trajectory.
Anybody can return a phone call. Most folks are good at sending off an email with a pointed question or concern. More people than should really know how to go on social media and turn a political subject on its head. But, apparently, not many of us have mastered the art of blessing.
So, today I want to encourage us all to try something in three steps:
1. Ask God to bring three people you haven’t talked to in a while to your mind.
2. Pick a passage of scripture and pray it over those people.
3. Send them a note or make a call to tell them.
And may the servants of God learn together the power of the well-timed word of encouragement.
Here’s what I am praying over all of our WorshipLife family –
“With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness. Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. Brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way.” (James 3:9-10, CSB)
Today, let’s speak the word of blessing to our Father and to each other. You will discover that the blessing you speak will come back to you over and over again.
