Caroline is four months old. She’s my granddaughter. Her Dad, Thomas Willis, works for the Nashville Predators. The other night, Caroline’s Mom and I took her to see her Dad at work and to her first hockey game. Ever been to a hockey game? It gets really loud – I mean LOUD!
She slept through it. Maybe she is just not that impressed with hockey. Maybe she’s as frustrated with the “offsides calls” as the rest of us. Or maybe it was the headphones.
It wouldn’t be smart to take a four-month-old to a hockey game with 17,000 screaming people without some sort of protection for her ears. So, Elizabeth and Thomas made sure our little princess was protected with a cute set of baby headphones. She was sleeping so well, and the Predators seemed to be sleeping too, I was tempted to try them on myself.
Earlier the same day, my other granddaughter Madeleine, came over with her parents for a visit. As my daughter-in-law came in with Maddie, my wife said, “Here comes the baby!” Then my son Lee came right behind her and said, “Here comes the other baby!” and then promptly put his 400-page dissertation down on the table. He had just sent off his completed draft to his committee and brought a copy for us to see and now is preparing for the defense in a few days. The approaching relief for Lee now at the end of a six-year process getting a master’s degree and a PhD is palatable.
What do headphones and dissertations have to do with each other?
In the midst of all of our stresses and noise, there is a quiet peace available to us as children of God. The Psalmist tells us that our Shepherd leads us besides “still waters” (headphones) and through the “valley of death” (dissertations). Whatever you are facing, you will move through it with Him. Stay in His word and make sure His voice is the loudest one you hear. Trust that He is leading you and will get you through it. Your Good Shepherd will not abandon you and can cover your soul with His peace in the chaos.
God leads us to things and through things… that’s the point.
All of that, plus the fact that I just wanted to brag on Lee finishing his doctorate and blog about my girls so I could show you their pictures…
