Digital sampling has come a long way in recent years. For those of you who may not know what digital sampling is, it’s a way of creating a computer-generated sound that reproduces the sound waves of real instruments.
I’ve heard demonstrations of this technique that are down right scary. There are digital libraries now that can imitate real instruments and the way they sound in concert halls across the world. But something I have heard over and over about this technology is that there is one instrument, so far, that has defied exact digital reproduction – the TRUMPET.
Now, there are attempts that come very close and every advance in digital sounds are getting closer and closer. But, the professional ear of an engineer can spot a digital “orchestra” pretty quickly when they hear the trumpet sound. It just can’t be reproduced artificially.
The Psalmist tells us – NO! – commands us to praise Him with the trumpet. Psalm 150:3 says,
“Praise Him with the trumpet blast.”
The Psalm also groups several other instruments together – but the trumpet stands alone. There is something about this instrument that expresses an aspect of God’s glory that is unique. Even the return of Christ is marked by the sound of a trumpet.
Perhaps it is the intensity of the trumpet sound, or it’s ability to penetrate other sounds to the point of recognition in a loud setting. I’m not sure why.
But the worship of God by His people should bear some of the same characteristics of this instrument.
Clear. Exact. Powerful. Intense. Strong. Dynamic. What word would you use?
Oh, and the last one… Pure. Just like the digital sound cannot be exactly reproduced – neither can our worship. It’s got to be real.
So, praise Him. Praise Him with – and like – the trumpet.
