Last Sunday, like many of you, our church recognized our graduating seniors. And seated about 10 rows behind the seniors was our youngest son, John. Just one year ago, we were seated with the graduates and their families as we anticipated commencement a few days later. And now, he is a rising sophomore in college – grades already in and his freshman year under his belt. I looked back to his seat and thought how grown up he looked now, just one year removed from his own moment on senior recognition day.
Those 10 rows are the shortest distance I’ve ever traveled.
Time waits for no one, and this year has to be the fastest one yet. My oldest son is closing in on his PhD from The University of Texas. My daughter is an established schoolteacher. They are both married to wonderful spouses. Now, the baby is all grown too, and it’s come back to Teresa and me.
Last week, I was teaching at Liberty University – where I’m privileged to serve on the faculty in an adjunct role. The students are sharp and eager to accomplish great things with their talents. As the week went along, I felt like I was watching flowers bloom as they began to incorporate some of the principles for ministry we studied in their presentations. I fully expect to hear great things from the lives and work of these students.
Life is passing by. For all of us.
But one day, Jesus will come and take us home. And on that day, as we are lost in the wonder of worship, we will have this thought – one that escapes us now no matter how hard we want to hold on – This is going to last forever.
That hope helps us make another short journey… the one from fear to faith.
And with the courage of faith, I express my gratitude to the One who exchanges every fleeting moment now colored with of a tinge of sorrow for His joy in unspeakable gifts that will last forever.
Happy Graduation Day!
