OK! I’m dating myself right now, but if you start a sentence with “What the world needs now” to someone of my generation, their response would be, “Is love, sweet love,” along with the nice little melody of the classic Dionne Warwick song. It was a recent conversation with a great Christian artist that has me thinking about this particular phrase.
Natalie Grant, the iconic “voice” that has inspired worshippers everywhere with songs like “Your Great Name,” “Held,” or her current song “Hurricane” from her latest project by that title, was our special guest at LifeWay chapel last week. Simply put, she brought it!
But I’m not talking about her powerhouse vocals. I’m talking about her ministry to our team – both on and off the stage. She was so kind and servant-minded all day long. I was blessed to interview her for a future webcast, and during the entire time, she blessed us with words of wisdom that only a seasoned worship leader like Natalie could do.
But it was something she said off camera that has me thinking about what the world really needs. Here’s the quote:
“The world doesn’t need another song, they need hope. So my prayer, is that this music will reach them to their depths.”
She went on to talk about the foundation she created, Abolition International (which recently merged with and is now known as “Hope For Justice”), a ministry she helped start that touches the lives of victims of human trafficking in multiple countries around the world. And the point is made – the world really doesn’t need our music. But, the world is desperate for the hope of mankind – Jesus. Our songs can’t change a person’s life. But Jesus can.
Our music matters only as far as it takes His name – His Great Name!
And because Natalie has learned this lesson, she is humble about her talent and faithful in her focus to share Jesus through her life. I was inspired to do the same better than ever before. To… Love Him. Serve Him. Share Him. And yes, Sing about Him.
After all – that’s what the world needs now.
