Last week, I introduced a series of blogs to present four values our team associates with healthy worship ministry. The first one, Telling the Story, describes the intentional presentation of the story of Jesus in our ministries.
This week, we look at the second value:
Making True Disciples – Ephesians 4:11-12
Healthy worship ministries understand they are part of the disciple making process for both the congregations they lead and the people they shepherd within their ministry. They embrace the role of spiritual leadership primarily from the context of music and worship leadership but not only that way. They do not see themselves as the “hired musicians” but rather as part of the team that leads the church in making disciples. They are serious Bible students and active followers of Christ.
One look inside a disciple-making worship ministry reveals much more than finely executed musical moments. It reveals a community of believers growing in their faith and growing closely together as fellow servants. There are no divas — only well connected followers of Christ who are engaged in the whole mission of the church – making disciples.
Equally important is that these ministries understand the content of the music they lead should represent a disciple-making strategy. It includes the spectrum of God-revealing lyrics and Christ-honoring moments of worship. The services do more than orchestrate a worship response… they join in the revelation of God through His word in the songs we sing.
Not to be overly cliché, but healthy worship ministries understand Jesus didn’t call us to make music – He called us to make disciples. And this commission is not just for the Senior Pastor or discipleship ministry. It is our responsibility too.
