A few months ago, the Worship Pastor at the church that my family attends left for a new opportunity at a new church in a new town. Our church has had a hard time filling the void, and, to be honest, I’ve struggled with “worship time” since this transition occurred. I remember having a conversation with my wife about how much I missed our old worship pastor and how I don’t really enjoy praise and worship time like I used to.
Her response hit me like a ton of bricks… “Praise and Worship isn’t about the lead singer; it’s not about who is playing the guitar or who is playing the drums. It’s not about the songs we sing or whether the piano is in tune or not. It’s about you and God. It’s about your relationship with Him. Nothing else matters.”
This conversation opened my eyes to the fact that I was approaching worship entirely wrong — and that’s when I knew that doing a theme on worship for our Faithbox community was a must. I figured that I couldn’t be the only one that was struggling with worship. Not just worship on Sunday mornings at church, but worship in my daily life.
One thing that is so important to us at Faithbox is to surround ourselves with great partners that can continue to help our community grow in their walk with Jesus. When the theme of worship came up, there was only one option in our eyes for a partner, and today, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our collaboration with LifeWay Worship as we build our July Faithbox.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Faithbox, each month we choose a theme and then write our original 31 day devotional, Everyday Faith, around that theme. We also include a relevant book by a Christian author, and then we include items from “do good” companies across the globe that give back to those who really need it.
It’s been awesome to watch the team at LifeWay Worship curate this box. Rarely do we take a back seat like we have done for the worship box but it’s been so clear from the beginning that they were going to create something special. From the writings, to the content, to the music, we are thrilled with how things have come together and are confident that our entire community will look at worship in an entirely different way as we go through the month.
I’ve had a sneak peek at what’s inside and I know, for me, it’s going to be an impactful month. I’ll end with a quote by John Ortberg that you’ll find in your Everyday Faith devotional:
“I need to worship because without it I can forget that I have a big God beside me and live in fear. I need to worship because without it I can forget his calling and begin to live in a spirit of self-preoccupation. I need to worship because without it I lose a sense of wonder and gratitude and plod through life with blinders on. I need worship because my natural tendency is toward self-reliance and stubborn independence.”
I need worship. You need worship. We all need worship.
